The Dominican Republic has started a safeguard investigation concerning imports of sweet and savoury biscuits. The notification, shared with the World Trade Organization (WTO), provides details about the investigation process and how interested parties can participate.

According to the notice, all correspondence related to the investigation should be directed to the Comisión Reguladora de Prácticas Desleales en el Comercio y sobre Medidas de Salvaguardias (“CDC”) in Santo Domingo. The CDC can be contacted by phone at 809-476-0111 ext. 248 or by email at info@cdc.gob.do.

A safeguard investigation is conducted to assess whether a surge in imports of a specific product is causing or threatening to cause serious harm to domestic producers. During this process, importers, exporters, and other stakeholders have the opportunity to present evidence and express their views, as well as respond to others’ submissions.

If it is determined that increased imports are responsible for actual or potential serious injury, WTO rules allow member countries like the Dominican Republic to implement temporary measures that restrict imports of the product in question.

Further information on this investigation can be found in document G/SG/N/6/DOM/6.
