WTO members met to discuss the integration of small, vulnerable economies (SVEs) into global trade, focusing on digital trade and the challenges these economies face. The meeting followed up on a report about digital trade and SVEs first presented in March.
During the session, members highlighted the role of digitally delivered services in diversifying exports for SVEs. They stressed the need to improve internet access and affordability as well as workforce skills in these countries. Members also called for SVEs to make full use of WTO agreements and other available tools to support growth in digital trade.
The meeting included the adoption of a technical assistance and training plan for 2026-2027. The plan emphasizes a mix of face-to-face training, virtual activities, and blended delivery methods. Members noted that technical cooperation remains a core function of the WTO’s work and expressed support for stronger collaboration with international and regional organizations. The plan was developed with input from members and will be reviewed by the WTO Committee on Budget, Finance and Administration later this month.
Ambassador Mzukisi Qobo of South Africa, who chairs the Committee, informed members about ongoing consultations regarding a possible informal session on investment climate needs assessment during Development Week in November 2025.
