The U.S. Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina has announced the opening of the Fulbright Foreign Student Program competition for the 2026-2027 academic year. This initiative is part of the Visiting Student Researcher category, providing financial support for non-degree, full-time academic research at U.S. institutions.

Established in 1946 under legislation by former Senator J. William Fulbright, this program aims to foster mutual understanding between the United States and other countries. Funded by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), it offers grants ranging from four to nine months.

Applicants are encouraged to align their projects with U.S. government priorities such as enhancing national security, promoting economic prosperity, and fostering international cooperation. "Your innovative ideas can contribute to a stronger, safer, and more prosperous America while building lasting global partnerships that strengthen bi-national relations," states an official announcement.

Candidates must apply online by August 4, 2025. They should propose their own research projects and may indicate up to three preferred host institutions in the U.S., although placements will be determined based on various criteria.

Eligibility requirements include being a citizen or permanent resident of Bosnia and Herzegovina enrolled in a Ph.D. or master's program relevant to their proposed research field. English proficiency is necessary but does not require TOEFL registration at initial application stages.

Award benefits include round-trip airfare, monthly stipends covering living expenses, coverage for full-time research fees at host institutions, limited health coverage, pre-departure orientation in Sarajevo, among others.

Applications must contain several components including a research objectives statement, personal statement, curriculum vitae without personal details like birth date or marital status, reference letters preferably in English from academic supervisors or work-related mentors in the proposed study field.

Finalists will be interviewed in Sarajevo during August 2025 before receiving final approval from the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
