Richard M. Mills, Jr. U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria | U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria

Good evening, colleagues, friends, and honored speakers including Permanent Secretary Dr. Dunoma Umar Ahmed, Chairman Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, governors, ministers, and distinguished guests.

The United States celebrated its 249th anniversary of independence with a focus on the shared values of freedom, democracy, and opportunity that unite it with Nigeria. Ambassador Richard Mills Jr. expressed his honor in joining the commemoration.

Ambassador Mills extended gratitude to USAID colleagues for their service across Nigeria. He acknowledged their efforts in transforming lives through health and education programs while empowering communities. As USAID's mission concludes in Nigeria, he assured that the life-saving programs would continue through an enduring partnership.

The U.S.-Nigeria partnership continues to evolve with a commitment to mutual prosperity and growth in commerce and trade between the nations. In 2024, two-way trade reached nearly $13 billion, creating economic opportunities and jobs for both Americans and Nigerians. This growth highlights the strategic importance of the bilateral relationship.

Ambassador Mills also announced the launch of U.S.-Nigeria Commercial and Investment Partnership Working Groups last week. These groups consist of private sector participants from both countries focused on identifying non-tariff barriers to trade and investment in agriculture, digital economy, and infrastructure sectors. The goal is to stimulate trade for mutual benefit as equal commercial partners.

A special mention was given to the Youth Excellence on Stage Academy band — Burgundy West — whose performance was noted for capturing the energy and potential of Nigeria’s youth. Their music reflects creativity and promise that define U.S.-Nigeria collaboration.

"Thank you," concluded Ambassador Mills Jr., "and happy Independence Day!"
