The U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo has issued a weather alert for the Dominican Republic, following a red alert from the Emergency Operations Center (COE) due to heavy rainfall. The areas affected include Santo Domingo, the National District, San Cristobal, and Monseñor Nouel provinces. These conditions could lead to significant flash and urban flooding.
A yellow alert is in place for nine provinces, while eight provinces are under a green alert. U.S. citizens requiring assistance can contact 809-567-7775.
Residents and visitors are advised not to walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters and should move to higher ground if necessary. It's crucial to stay off bridges and avoid driving through flooded areas. If trapped in a vehicle by rising water, individuals should only exit if it is safe.
The embassy advises staying informed about weather conditions via sources like the National Hurricane Center at https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/. In case of emergencies or dangerous situations, contact local authorities or call 911. The tourist police can be reached at 809-200-3500 or through their mobile app "POLITUR APP."
Spanish alerts are available on the COE website http://www.coe.gob.do/ or via their app "alertaCOE." U.S. citizens are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Program for updates relevant to the Dominican Republic at https://step.state.gov/.
Preparedness tips can be found at Ready.gov, and it's recommended that families review contingency plans without relying on U.S. government assistance. Ensure travel documents are current and accessible.
