On December 17, 2025, the U.S. Embassy’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) donated canine equipment and training supplies valued at approximately US$77,000 to the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service (TTPrS). The donation also included a newly commissioned whelping facility for dogs and newborn puppies, as well as two previously donated canine transportation vehicles. These resources are intended to support the TTPrS working dog program, which is used by officers to detect narcotics, firearms, ammunition, and other contraband in correctional facilities and during national joint exercises.
The embassy’s latest contribution continues its history of collaboration with Trinidad and Tobago’s law enforcement agencies. In 2024, the U.S. Embassy provided two trained canines to the Trinidad and Tobago Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU). It also partnered with U.S. pet supplier Chewy to supply first aid kits, training materials, grooming kits, and operational gear to several local agencies including TTPrS, TOCU, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), and the Customs and Excise Division (TTCED). Additionally, the TTCED kennel facility was refurbished. INL has also worked with local law enforcement agencies and Wishing for Wings Foundation to establish a round-the-clock emergency veterinary care plan for working dogs injured on duty or requiring specialized medical attention.
U.S. embassy Chargé d’Affaires Dr. Jenifer Neidhart de Ortiz stated: “Our donation today and our ongoing cooperation with Trinidad and Tobago law enforcement and military units underscore the United States’ commitment to disrupting narcotrafficking networks, and enhancing regional security cooperation for the betterment of all of us who live in the Western Hemisphere. Dogs are force multipliers in global security, enhancing detection of narcotics, explosives, firearms, and radiological threats; supporting search and rescue operations; and bolstering protective patrols at embassies and borders worldwide. We are proud to partner with the TT Prison Service to support their working canine program.”
