The U.S. Department of State has opened applications for the 2026 Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) for Secondary Educators program. This initiative provides secondary school teachers and administrators from around the world with an opportunity to participate in a five-week academic program in the United States during summer 2026.
The program will take place at leading U.S. institutions, including the University of Montana, Institute for Training and Development in Massachusetts, and California State University, Chico. The curriculum focuses on U.S. society, history, and institutions rather than teaching methods or English language instruction. Participants will spend four weeks in academic residency followed by a one-week field experience in another region of the country.
A total of 60 international educators and administrators will be selected and divided into three multinational groups. Eligible applicants are mid-career professionals aged 30 to 50 with 10 to 20 years of relevant experience, strong interest in U.S. studies and curriculum development, limited or no prior experience in the United States, and fluency in English as demonstrated by proficiency certificates.
Those eligible include secondary school teachers, administrators, teacher trainers, curriculum developers, textbook writers, Ministry of Education officials, among others. However, U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and relatives of employees from the U.S. embassy, American Institute in Taiwan or Fulbright commission are not eligible.
All costs related to travel, housing, meals, and health insurance will be covered by the program. Participants will also have access to academic resources and cultural activities along with opportunities for professional networking.
Applications must be submitted by Thursday, January 8, 2026. Selected candidates will undergo an interview process conducted in English or may be asked to submit a video recording.
The program requires full participation throughout its duration; family members or friends cannot accompany participants.
