The United States has announced the arrival of seven personnel from the Security Assistance Training Command (SATCO) in Papua New Guinea. The team is set to conduct training with the Papua New Guinea Defense Force (PNGDF) at Goldie River Training Depot and Murray Barracks over the next month. This marks SATCO's third visit to PNG, following previous engagements focused on infantry tactical training, armorers’ courses, and medical training.

During the past week, the SATCO team held discussions with Major Mathews, PNGDF Force Matron, and the Director of Health Services to outline a medical course and future plans for PNGDF medical personnel. They also connected with members of the Wisconsin National Guard (WING) to establish relationships through their State Partnership Program (SPP).

On March 14th, the SATCO team observed air infiltration training by the 1st Royal Pacific Islands Regiment (RPIR) using a contracted UH-1 helicopter. Discussions were initiated with Warrior Wing leadership regarding an upcoming Warrior Course focused on Small Unit Tactics (SUT). Additionally, meetings took place with the 1 RPIR Commander and a New Zealand Defense Force (NZDF) SAS doctor and medic to discuss contributions to PNGDF's medical training.

This initiative is part of ongoing U.S. efforts to train with PNGDF. It holds particular significance in 2025 as it coincides with both the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinea's independence and US-PNG diplomatic relations.

Training for both Medical and SUT courses began on March 18th, with further activities planned throughout March and early April.

U.S. Army personnel assigned to SATCO met with Papua New Guinea Defence Force Force Matron and Department of Health Director to discuss an upcoming medical course for PNGDF medical staff.
