The United States has expressed its support for the renewal of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) mandate. During a UN Security Council briefing, a U.S. representative thanked council members for their efforts to reach consensus on the Presidential Text, facilitated by the Council’s Presidents in February and March.
The adoption of this text underscores the council's backing for UNAMA, ensuring that it continues to be a partner for both the Afghan people and the international community. The U.S. representative called on UNAMA to intensify its efforts to promote human rights in Afghanistan, with particular emphasis on women and girls.
Support was also voiced for UNAMA’s role in addressing Afghanistan's humanitarian crisis, stabilizing its economy, promoting peace and stability, and facilitating dialogue among Afghan political actors and stakeholders.
Acknowledgment was given to UNAMA staff working under challenging conditions. Their reporting is deemed crucial for informing the Security Council’s decisions regarding Afghanistan.
The U.S. representative referred to recent reports by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), emphasizing that it is incumbent upon the Taliban to demonstrate their commitment to counterterrorism measures and respect international legal obligations as outlined in an independent assessment by the UN.
While appreciating UNAMA’s implementation efforts concerning this assessment, it was noted that additional mechanisms are necessary to achieve these goals. The U.S. reiterated calls on the UN Secretary-General to implement Security Council Resolution 2721.
"I thank you," concluded the statement from the U.S. representative at the briefing.
