Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, representing the United States at the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government meeting, arrived in Georgetown, Guyana. Her delegation includes Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian A. Nichols, USAID Assistant Administrator Marcela Escobari, Senior Coordinator for Atlantic Cooperation Ambassador Jessye Lapenn, and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Diplomacy Laura Lochman.
On February 24, 2024, during the first day of her visit, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield held discussions with Guyana's President Dr. Mohamad Irfaan Ali. Their talks focused on significant bilateral and global issues as Guyana currently chairs CARICOM and is a member of the United Nations Security Council. A major topic was supporting a unified response to Haiti's crisis and the urgent need to deploy a Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) there. The Ambassador also emphasized the U.S.'s commitment to respecting Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Additionally, members of the delegation engaged with senior officials at an event hosted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), where IDB President Ilan Goldfajn was present. During this engagement, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield highlighted the importance of increasing financial access for Caribbean nations.
