Robert A. Wood, Ambassador | U.S. Mission to the United Nations

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield discussed ongoing global conflicts during an interview on "CNN This Morning." The conversation touched on Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the situation in Gaza.

Addressing concerns about the trajectory of the war in Ukraine, Thomas-Greenfield emphasized U.S. efforts to support Ukraine, stating, "The Administration has been working diligently to get the assistance to the Ukrainian effort." She highlighted Ukraine's resilience, noting that they have reclaimed 50% of territory previously occupied by Russia.

Former Ukrainian First Lady Kateryna Yushchenko expressed frustration over delays in military aid, asserting that timely assistance could have ended the conflict with a Ukrainian victory. In response, Thomas-Greenfield said, "I’m not a military strategist," but reiterated the importance of continued U.S. support for Ukraine.

Shifting focus to Gaza, Thomas-Greenfield explained why the U.S. vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire. She stated that such a resolution would hinder efforts to negotiate peace and secure hostages' release. "We cannot support a ceasefire that only gives an advantage to Hamas," she asserted.

Thomas-Greenfield also addressed reports of sexual violence in Gaza attributed to Hamas. She expressed grave concern and supported ongoing investigations into these allegations: "We’re very concerned about these reports."

The ambassador underscored her commitment to addressing sexual violence as a tool of war and mentioned meetings with UN officials focused on this issue.

The interview concluded with appreciation from moderators for Thomas-Greenfield's insights into these complex international issues.
