Stefano Mocci appointed as new World Bank Group manager for Fiji

SUVA, July 1, 2024 – Stefano Mocci has been appointed as the World Bank Group Country Manager for Fiji, a role that aims to unify country-level leadership to better support the nation’s public and private sector priorities. This newly created position will provide a single point of contact for accessing the full range of World Bank Group products and services, enhancing the institution's ability to address global challenges and drive development with speed, efficiency, and impact.

“We are committed to this new and unified leadership approach that will enable us to better support the country’s public and private sector to better serve the people of Fiji,” said Stefano Mocci. “Unified Bank Group leadership will improve our speed and make us a better partner to the government, the private sector, and ultimately the people we serve.”

The World Bank Group is focused on strengthening economic and climate resilience; building social protection and health systems; enhancing the sustainability of Fiji’s tourism sector; increasing gender inclusion; and improving infrastructure resilience in the country. Additionally, it is committed to supporting private sector development by enhancing the enabling environment for investment and improving environmental, social, and governance practices.

Prior to this role, Stefano Mocci held various positions across the World Bank Group, most recently serving as World Bank Country Manager for both the South Pacific and Papua New Guinea. He has also held field-based posts in middle-income countries as well as fragile, conflict-affected states. Mocci served as Senior Country Officer and Senior Operations Officer in the Middle East and North Africa Region, overseeing program delivery while maintaining close relationships with national authorities in West Bank and Gaza, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria. Before joining the World Bank Group in 2000, Mocci worked as a Governance Program Officer at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The introduction of joint country representation marks an important step towards building a stronger World Bank Group. Fiji is one of 21 offices transitioning to a single World Bank Group Country Manager or Resident Representative for IBRD, IDA, IFC, and MIGA. Mr. Mocci will continue his existing role as World Bank Country Manager for other South Pacific countries including Kiribati, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Nauru.
