A Level 2 Travel Health Notice has been issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for Chikungunya disease in Sri Lanka. The disease, transmitted to humans through mosquito bites, typically presents symptoms such as fever, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, or rash within three to seven days after exposure.
The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka stated that all travel restrictions for its personnel have been lifted. However, it cautioned travelers that Sri Lanka is still recovering from Cyclone Ditwah, which may result in poor road conditions and possible train disruptions.
Travelers are advised to monitor local media for updates and be prepared to adjust their plans if necessary. The embassy recommends visiting the CDC’s Travelers Health Page on Chikungunya in Sri Lanka as well as the Medical Assistance page of the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka for more information about medical care options.
"See a doctor if you have a fever, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, or rash," according to the advisory. "Ask your doctor about upcoming travel."
Travelers are also encouraged to purchase travel insurance before departure and check with their providers regarding evacuation assistance and coverage for medical issues or trip cancellation.
