A two-day training workshop organized by the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines’ Regional English Language Office (RELO) took place in Mactan, Cebu on September 26 and 27. The event brought together 48 Filipino educators from various regions for intensive professional development focused on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and new literacy strategies into classroom instruction.
The workshop, titled “The Educator’s Edge: Mastering Literacy, AI, and Critical Thought,” was led by three American English Language Fellows—Laura Roach, Maryann Miller, and Michael Schapiro. These fellows are U.S. TESOL professionals selected by the U.S. Department of State for year-long assignments overseas to support educational initiatives.
During the sessions, participants worked on an integrated learning module designed to guide students from basic language skills toward more advanced critical thinking abilities. The goal is for teachers to use this module in their classrooms and share it with colleagues to spread improved teaching practices.
Educators also gained hands-on experience with several American-developed AI and EdTech tools intended to personalize learning and improve classroom efficiency. These technologies aim to streamline tasks such as content creation, assessment, and differentiated instruction so teachers can dedicate more time to student engagement and developing critical thinking.
U.S. Embassy Regional English Language Officer Jeff McIlvenna described the initiative as a significant step in U.S.-Philippines educational cooperation. “The paradigm of this activity was specifically designed by our American trainers for the professional development of Filipino educators,” he said. “This program is a concrete example of the robust bilateral cooperation and shared values between the United States and the Philippines, providing revolutionary techniques, and showcasing American excellence in English teaching in the Philippines.”
This training forms part of ongoing efforts by RELO to support education across the country. Currently, American English Language Fellows are involved with projects at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, Southern Leyte State University, and Mariano Marcos State University as part of long-term collaborations in education.
