Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced on its website a collaboration with SAP to introduce SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. This new independent cloud is supported by a planned €7.8 billion investment.
According to Amazon’s newsroom, AWS and SAP have been partners for over 16 years, working together on cloud innovations for enterprises across various industries. The latest collaboration aims to provide European public sector organizations and regulated industries with enhanced digital sovereignty solutions. Amazon said that combining SAP’s enterprise expertise with AWS’s infrastructure will offer customers more options in meeting sovereignty requirements without hindering innovation.
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud will be supported by a planned €7.8 billion investment from Amazon, as per the company’s official announcement. The first AWS Region is expected to launch in Brandenburg, Germany by late 2025 and will operate independently from non-EU infrastructure. Amazon indicated that this regional cloud will address sovereignty requirements such as data residency, operational autonomy, and resiliency for European customers.
SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities are already available on AWS in regions including Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada, and India, according to the announcement. The European rollout will begin with SAP Business Technology Platform and SAP Cloud ERP, which are designed to help organizations manage critical business processes and sensitive data. SAP said that deploying these solutions on AWS European Sovereign Cloud ensures compliance with local regulations while allowing customers to scale and innovate securely.
