The U.S. Embassy in Kampala has issued a security alert ahead of the Ugandan Electoral Commission’s nominations for presidential candidates, scheduled for September 23 and 24, 2025. The embassy warns that several areas in Kampala and surrounding districts will experience increased security measures during this period.

According to the alert, locations affected include Independence Park in Kololo, Katwe Grounds, parts of Wakiso District such as the Lweza-Lubowa area along Old Entebbe Road leading to Entebbe Airport, and Kaala Playground in Nateete. The embassy states there will be rolling road closures throughout Kampala on both days, with checkpoints, barriers, and an increased police presence to manage crowds.

The embassy advises individuals to remain vigilant if they are in these areas. “Be alert in the above-mentioned areas,” the statement reads. It also recommends monitoring local media for updates, avoiding crowds and demonstrations, keeping a low profile, notifying friends and family about personal safety, being aware of surroundings, reviewing personal security plans, and carrying proper identification including a U.S. passport with a current Ugandan visa.
