His Excellency William W. Popp, the U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, was among the distinguished guests at an event marking the acceptance of a new President for the U.S. Exchange Alumni Network in Uganda. The speech highlighted a commitment to collective growth and collaboration within the network.
The newly appointed President expressed gratitude for assuming this role and emphasized that it is not merely a personal achievement but a reflection of shared trust and purpose. "I am fully aware that this moment is not a reward for individual merit, but a reflection of collective trust and shared purpose," stated the new leader.
Acknowledging past leadership, the President noted, "To the outgoing leadership, thank you for the trail you have blazed." The focus will be on building upon existing efforts rather than replacing them.
The speech also drew on cultural wisdom with references to proverbs from Uganda and Rwanda, illustrating the importance of strong foundations and community collaboration. "As a Ugandan proverb says: 'A tree is known by its fruit, but it starts with the root.' Today, I honor the roots."
The new leader called on alumni to contribute their skills across various domains such as strategy, research, creativity, community organizing, or compassion. The emphasis was on taking initiative regardless of circumstances: "We are not waiting for perfect conditions; we are showing up with what we have and starting where we are."
Quoting former U.S. President Barack Obama, they reminded attendees that change requires proactive effort: “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”
The President outlined priorities including strengthening collaboration across different cohorts and regions, fostering mentorship and entrepreneurship opportunities, and amplifying alumni stories to showcase their impact.
In closing remarks drawing from an African proverb about unity in progress—“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”—the President encouraged continued joint efforts in building a strong network legacy.
