The United States has imposed sanctions on a key leader of the Tren de Aragua (TdA), a Foreign Terrorist Organization originating from Venezuela. The group is known for its violent activities across the hemisphere.
Giovanni Vicente Mosquera Serrano, identified as a prominent member of TdA, has been involved in narcotics trafficking and murders in Colombia on behalf of the organization. Additionally, he has played a role in extortion and managing the financial gains from TdA's criminal operations. The Department of State, through its Transnational Organized Crime Rewards Program managed by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, is offering up to $3 million for information leading to Mosquera Serrano's arrest or conviction.
In conjunction with these sanctions, the FBI has added Mosquera Serrano to its Top 10 Most Wanted List. The Department of Justice has also unsealed an indictment charging him with drug trafficking and terrorism-related offenses.
This move comes after TdA was recently designated as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. The United States aims to protect its citizens by addressing threats posed by TdA's violent activities across the region.
The sanctions are executed under Executive Orders 13581 and 13224, as amended. Further details about this designation can be found in Treasury’s press release.
