Mount Lewotobi in East Flores, Indonesia, erupted on June 17, 2025. The eruption has created a significant ash cloud affecting air travel across the region. Multiple airports are closed or experiencing flight cancellations and delays.

American citizens planning to travel to or from Bali, Lombok, Flores (Labuan Bajo), or nearby airports should contact their airlines for updates on flight operations. Airports like Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo, Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar, Bali, and Lombok International Airport in Mataram report cancellations due to the volcanic activity.

Airports in Maumere, Ende, East Flores, Ambon, and Kupang are also facing total closures or cancellations. An 8km exclusion zone is established around Mount Lewotobi as it remains at Tier 4 on Indonesia’s volcanic alert scale. Authorities advise American citizens to avoid this area until it is declared safe.

Travelers affected by delays leading to visa overstay issues should contact the nearest Immigration office for extensions. Some visas may be extended online via the official immigration website.

The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta advises monitoring local news for updates and notifying friends and family of safety status. Travelers should avoid the vicinity of Mount Lewotobi and have evacuation plans that do not depend on U.S. government assistance.
