The USS LEWIS B. PULLER (ESB-3) is currently in Malta for repairs at the Palumbo Shipyard. The ship, part of Naval Surface Force Atlantic, arrived on May 27, 2025, with a crew consisting of approximately 150 U.S. Navy Sailors and civilian mariners from the Military Sealift Command. Before reaching Malta, the vessel operated in the FIFTH Fleet area, conducting various maritime operations.

The visit follows a similar maintenance period by its sister ship, USS HERSHEL “WOODY” WILLIAMS (ESB-4), which was serviced at the same shipyard from March to July 2023. These visits enhance maritime collaboration between the United States and Malta and contribute to Malta's economy.

While undergoing repairs, the officers and crew are engaging in cultural activities in Malta. Ken Toko, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, remarked on the significance of the ship's arrival: “We’re excited to welcome the USS LEWIS B. PULLER and its crew to Malta. The United States greatly appreciates the technical expertise offered at the Maltese dockyard, which is not available in many other locations.”

A change of command occurred on June 13 aboard the USS LEWIS B. PULLER when Commander Philip Cox took over from Captain Raul Acevedo. Captain Acevedo reflected on his time in Malta: “It was my privilege to command a ship into the Grand Harbor, and the crew and I were overwhelmed by the hospitality and kindness of the Maltese people.” Commander Cox expressed his enthusiasm: “It’s exciting to take command in such an historic location. PULLER’s maintenance period is off to a great start.”
