On May 27, the FSM Office of Veterans Affairs, in coordination with the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Veterans of Pohnpei Association (USVPA), held a Memorial Day ceremony at Pohnpei International Airport's arrival lounge. The event featured portraits of 10 FSM citizens who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. military in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kuwait.

U.S. Ambassador Jennifer Johnson delivered remarks honoring both the fallen service members and their families. "To the families who have lost sons and daughters, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters – no words can ease your pain... but I hope you can find some peace when you think about the great times you shared together," she said.

Memorial Day began after the Civil War as a day to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces—a tradition proudly upheld by many FSM citizens. Each year, families worldwide decorate soldiers' graves with flowers and wreaths. Ambassador Johnson’s hometown, Waterloo, NY, is recognized as the “Birthplace of Memorial Day,” a title declared by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966. This year marks FSM's 24th observance of Memorial Day.

The United States and FSM share a unique relationship based on mutual respect and shared values such as democracy, human rights, and rule of law—symbolized by the Compact of Free Association. "This bond is not just a matter of policy but of deep personal connections and shared histories," Ambassador Johnson remarked during her tribute to fallen heroes and their families. "Talking about those that we have lost is a way to keep their spirit alive," she added.

The program included performances by Pohnpei SDA School’s Choir singing national anthems from both countries, speeches honoring heroes from both nations, and wreath presentations for the 10 fallen soldiers. Director Hainrick Panuelo from FSM’s Office of Veteran’s Affairs opened with reflections on Memorial Day's significance as a time for gathering to honor those who gave their lives in military service.

Thanking participants for joining this special commemoration day was also part of remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
