The resolution includes an extension of the South Sudan Panel of Experts' mandate and renews measures such as the arms embargo, travel ban, and asset freeze for another year.
Recent violence has pushed South Sudan towards potential civil war. "The people of South Sudan deserve a peaceful political process and an end to the violence," stated the U.S., urging South Sudanese leaders to reduce tensions and negotiate peace.
The U.S. emphasized the importance of renewing the arms embargo to prevent weapons from flooding into a region already saturated with firearms. "Too many innocent lives have been lost due to gun violence and armed conflict," it was noted.
Incidents like the March 2025 attack on UN personnel in Nasir County and the May 3 bombing of a Medecins Sans Frontieres hospital highlight the need for weapon control in South Sudan.
The renewal also extends the mandate of the Panel of Experts (POE), whose reports aid Member States in understanding conditions on the ground. The U.S. remains committed to supporting peace efforts in South Sudan alongside other stakeholders.
