The U.S. government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has officially handed over the Lanyadyang bridge in Kitgum to the Ugandan government. This event marks the conclusion of a long-term infrastructure program in Northern Uganda, which was supported by the U.S. government in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and local communities.

The bridge is part of USAID’s Northern Uganda Development of Enhanced Local Governance Infrastructure and Livelihoods (NUDEIL) Program, initiated in 2009. The program aimed to support safety, security, and economic opportunities for communities affected by conflict with the Lord’s Resistance Army.

Throughout its duration, NUDEIL facilitated district local governments in planning and constructing infrastructure projects to improve education, transportation, and water supply services across seven districts: Gulu, Nwoya, Lamwo, Amuru, Kitgum, Omoro, and Oyam. The American people funded these projects through USAID.

Since its inception in 2009, NUDEIL has successfully completed numerous infrastructure projects including 437 kilometers of roads; 617 boreholes; 187 buildings such as classroom blocks and teacher housing units; and three office blocks for district engineering departments.

USAID Uganda Mission Director Daniele Nyirandutiye highlighted the significance of these efforts: “These projects will have a lasting impact on Uganda. Schoolchildren and teachers will have better learning environments. Households will have access to clean drinking water. Communities will have roads and bridges connecting their residents to markets, schools, and health centers.”

Nyirandutiye also emphasized the strong relationship between the United States government and Uganda during her closing remarks at the ceremony: “Today, as we dedicate this bridge, we mark the culmination of a fruitful collaboration between the United States, the Ministry of Local Government, and district local governments. Bridges are not endpoints; they are connections to communities. This bridge symbolizes both the past achievements and future of the Uganda-United States relationship.”
