The U.S. Embassy in Belgrade has opened applications for the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program for the 2026-27 academic year, targeting Serbian citizens. The program is part of a global competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and implemented by the Institute of International Education.
"The Humphrey Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State with funding provided by the U.S. Government and supported in its implementation by the Institute of International Education," according to the announcement from the Public Diplomacy Section.
Since its inception in 1978, nearly 6,900 fellows from 167 countries have participated, including 20 Serbians over the past decade.
The program seeks young, mid-career professionals who demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to public service. Participants will engage in an exchange of knowledge with Americans and other international fellows, gaining practical experience in various fields while familiarizing themselves with American society and culture.
The fellowship focuses on several professional fields grouped into four categories: Human and Institutional Capacity; Sustainable Lands; Thriving Communities; Rights and Freedoms.
For eligibility, candidates must hold Serbian citizenship, have an undergraduate degree, at least five years of relevant full-time professional experience by June 2026, limited or no prior experience in the United States, demonstrated leadership qualities, a record of public service in their community, and proficiency in English.
Applications are due July 31, 2025. Short-listed applicants will be contacted within 30 days for interviews at the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade during September's first week. Final selections will be announced in Washington D.C., February 2026.
"Appropriate candidates are young mid-career professionals... who have demonstrated a commitment to public service," stated the embassy’s release.
Fellows will receive coverage for air travel and other costs but must cover any expenses related to dependents joining them during their stay in the United States.
