The United States has reiterated its support for Ecuador's scientific and technological growth during the launch of the Ecuadorian Society for Space Science (SECE) on May 7. The event, held at Universidad San Francisco de Quito, gathered leaders from Ecuador's space sector to discuss collaboration in innovation, STEM education, and the geospatial industry.

Lawrence Petroni, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Ecuador, commended SECE's leadership for positioning Ecuador as a potential player in space exploration and technology. He emphasized nurturing young talent and strengthening local capabilities while expanding ties with U.S. scientific institutions: “The United States supports the expansion of its commercial space sector through collaboration with technical industries and academia to harness space technologies. This partnership drives economic growth and ensures a safer, more prosperous future for both the United States and Ecuador.”

The U.S. Embassy and Consulate continue to invest strategically in STEM education at universities in Ecuador. An example is the Planetary Innovation Challenge, supported by the U.S. Government in Ecuador. This program involves students from Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral in Guayaquil and Universidad de las Américas in Quito. Implemented by Milo Space Science Institute, an Arizona State University program, it allows students to create ventures addressing lunar mission challenges.

Petroni remarked on the dual benefits of these innovations: “What’s most inspiring is that many of these solutions also have practical applications here on Earth, helping foster a new generation of scientific leaders and innovators committed to global progress.”

The U.S. Government also facilitates American private-sector engagement by promoting strategic connections and creating an environment favorable to innovation and investment within the commercial space sector.
