Thank you, Madam Chair, and thanks also to the co-conveners, the esteemed President of the General Assembly, and the distinguished President of the Security Council. The United States continues to appreciate the work of the Peacebuilding Commission and in particular the efforts of Germany as PBC Chair and of the indefatigable Permanent Representatives of Egypt and Slovenia as co-facilitators of this year’s Peacebuilding Architecture Review.
In order to be effective, UN Peacebuilding must ensure outcomes that bring meaningful and material conflict prevention and lasting peace.
In this fourth review of the Peacebuilding Architecture, we must collectively work towards strengthening the Commission in its important work.
Previous Architecture Reviews have highlighted the need for enhanced UN coherence on peacebuilding implementation and for increased collaboration between the PBC and international financial institutions.
UN Peacebuilding must help facilitate practical steps that bring real value to conflict prevention and underpin the transition from conflict to peace.
In parallel, genuine national ownership in conflict prevention and peacebuilding efforts is critical to lasting peace.
Without the buy-in of parties to the conflict, UN peacebuilding will not be as effective as we all wish it to be. International donors alone cannot prevent conflict.
Sharpening an integrated, strategic, and coherent approach to prevention and peacebuilding that will maximize efficiencies can only follow if this crucial criterion of national ownership is met. Without this, peacebuilding efforts will not meet the needs of many stakeholders.
We look forward to working with this group, and all Member States, in achieving concrete outcomes and a consensus document that can guide peacebuilding efforts at the UN for the next five years.
More broadly, "the United States supports" "the UN’s return" "to its founding mission" "of promoting peace" "and security around" "the world."
Thank you.
