The U.S. Department of State has issued a travel advisory for El Salvador, updating the advisory level due to changes in crime rates. The agency advises travelers to exercise normal precautions in the country, noting a decrease in gang activity and a subsequent reduction in violent crimes and murders over the past three years.

U.S. government employees stationed in El Salvador are permitted to travel throughout the country during daylight hours. However, due to prevailing risks, they are restricted from traveling between cities or departments at night. Exceptions are in place for travel at all times between San Salvador and El Salvador’s international airport, and the La Libertad department. Moreover, public buses are off-limits for U.S. government employees.

The "State of Exception" declared by the Government of El Salvador in March 2022 remains in force. This measure was established in response to an upsurge in gang-related murders and allows authorities to detain individuals suspected of gang involvement, suspending several constitutional rights such as the right to a speedy or fair trial. A substantial number of individuals, including several U.S. citizens and other foreigners, are currently imprisoned under this state and have not yet faced trial.

Travelers to El Salvador are advised to adhere to several precautions, including using major roads, avoiding travel in rural areas at night, and being vigilant about surroundings. Travelers are also reminded of El Salvador's stringent laws against driving under the influence of alcohol, with the potential for detention for any detected level of alcohol while driving.

Other advice includes recommendations to travel in pairs or groups, avoid hitchhiking, remain alert in financial institutions, and refrain from displaying wealth. It is also advised to engage certified local guides when hiking and to heed water condition warnings when swimming at beaches.

Travelers are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts from the U.S. Embassy and make them easier to locate in emergencies. They are also urged to review the Country Security Report, prepare a backup plan for emergencies, and consult the CDC for the latest travel health information.

Finally, travelers are strongly recommended to purchase travel insurance that covers evacuation assistance, medical needs, and potential trip cancellations.
