In a recent UN Security Council Arria Formula Meeting, the focus was on the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in promoting international peace and security. Organized by UN representatives, the meeting brought together various stakeholders to discuss harnessing trustworthy AI.

Participants highlighted AI's significant potential in revolutionizing economic innovation, national security, and free expression. As noted, restricting AI development could hinder technological advancements and give an advantage to those who may misuse these systems. The possibility of AI contributing to international peace through enhanced decision-making, military strategy, and humanitarian efforts was underlined.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance emphasized the country's commitment to AI development in an earlier AI Action Summit in Paris. He shared that "the United States is focusing on AI’s opportunities," and is keen on pursuing this technology with openness and collaboration. Vice President Vance also said AI could enhance the ability of UN peacekeeping missions to fulfill their mandates better, by improving early warning systems and safeguarding information integrity.

In the meeting, there was a call to ensure AI is not exploited by "malicious actors" who could use the technology for human rights violations and to spread propaganda. There is concern over AI being used by adversaries to create disinformation, censor speech, and strengthen surveillance and militaries.

The session underscored the theme of utilizing AI for peacekeeping and security, acknowledging both the promising potential and the challenges posed by AI misuse. As the meeting ended, appreciation was extended to the organizers for the collaborative effort toward understanding AI's role in global peacekeeping.
