The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and New Taipei City have collaborated to launch the New Taipei American Shelf. The inauguration took place on March 21, 2025, at the Youth Department’s Youth Station, with AIT Director Raymond Greene and New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih in attendance.
American Shelves are established to facilitate cultural and informational exchange by providing current information on U.S. policies, culture, education, and values. The initiative aims to enhance understanding of American culture, support English language learning, and provide educational resources for the local community, particularly targeting the youth in the Greater Taipei area.
“AIT is proud of our long history of collaboration with New Taipei City across a wide variety of programs, and launching the New Taipei American Shelf marks another significant chapter in our partnership,” stated Director Greene during the event.
The New Taipei American Shelf will offer a collection of materials alongside hosting events such as book readings, cultural activities, and informational sessions about studying in the United States. It encourages youth to develop workplace and entrepreneurial skills through both physical and digital learning platforms while offering opportunities to deepen their understanding of American culture.
In addition to this new location, AIT has an American Center in Taipei and three American Corners located in Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung. The first American Innovation Center in Asia was launched in Taipei in 2014. AIT has also partnered with local entities to establish additional American Shelves across Yilan, Hualien, Tainan, Pingtung, and Penghu.
The New Taipei American Shelf is situated at No. 170 Minquan Rd., Banqiao District, New Taipei City.
