Multiple events in Lilongwe on March 19, 2025, may lead to heightened security risks and disruptions. Supporters of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) are gathering for separate events in Area 3. MCP youth have organized an anti-vandalism march from Kanengo to Crossroads. Meanwhile, DPP supporters will gather in Kanengo and Area 3 in support of Former President Mutharika's visit to Alfred Gangata at the Lilongwe Area 3 Police Station. Encounters between these groups could lead to unrest.
In Area 18, a group known as the Concerned Civil Servants plans a protest starting at 11:00 a.m. at the National War Memorial Tower, marching to Parliament. Though authorized, spontaneous disruptions may occur with a moderate to large turnout expected. Law enforcement will be present to maintain order.
Reports indicate that masked individuals, some allegedly armed, have gathered at the Kamuzu Mausoleum intending to confront civil servants and DPP supporters.
The potential for violence or spontaneous clashes remains high. Road congestion and disruptions are likely around affected areas. Demonstrations might escalate into violence and spread across other parts of Lilongwe. Crowds can grow violent without warning, possibly prompting tear gas use.
Authorities advise avoiding demonstration areas, exercising caution near large gatherings or protests, monitoring local media for updates, maintaining a low profile, and reviewing personal security plans.
