Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, following President Donald Trump's recent discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This meeting aimed to further efforts in reestablishing the bilateral relationship between the United States and Russia. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Special Envoy Ambassador Steve Witkoff accompanied Secretary Rubio, while Foreign Minister Lavrov was joined by Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian President.

The discussions focused on several key points. A consultation mechanism will be established to address issues affecting the bilateral relationship, aiming to normalize diplomatic operations between the two nations. Additionally, high-level teams will be appointed to work towards ending the conflict in Ukraine in a sustainable manner acceptable to all parties involved.

Furthermore, both sides intend to lay groundwork for future cooperation on mutual geopolitical interests and economic opportunities that may arise from resolving the conflict in Ukraine. The participants have pledged ongoing engagement to ensure progress is made effectively.

"President Trump wants to stop the killing; the United States wants peace and is using its strength in the world to bring countries together," stated Spokesperson Tammy Bruce. She emphasized that more than one phone call or meeting is necessary for lasting peace but acknowledged today's meeting as an important step forward.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was thanked for hosting this significant dialogue under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud's leadership.
