Professor Nienke Grossman has been reelected to serve a second term on the Inter-American Juridical Committee during the 54th OAS General Assembly held in Asuncion, Paraguay. The announcement was made by the U.S. Permanent Mission to the OAS on June 28, 2024.
Grossman is noted for being both the first woman and first Latina nominated by the United States to this position. Since its inception in 1942, she is one of only eight women who have served on the Committee. Her expertise as an international law scholar and advisor spans various topics, with a particular focus on issues involving women and international law.
Expressing her gratitude, Grossman stated: “I am honored to have been nominated by the United States, and elected by OAS member states, to serve on the IAJC. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues on the Committee to provide effective and useful advice on juridical matters to the OAS, and to working with States to advance the rule of law in the region.”
The United States' backing of her candidacy reflects its commitment towards gender equality and empowerment within international bodies such as the OAS. This support aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 5.5 which aims for women's full participation and equal opportunities in leadership across political, economic, and public spheres.
