President Pellegrini, Deputy Prime Minister Kalinak, Deputy Prime Minister Kmec, Minister Blanar, General Zmeko, General Stohler, General Doyle, and other distinguished guests gathered for a ceremony marking the arrival of Slovakia's first F-16 fighter jets. The event was attended by U.S. Ambassador Rana who expressed honor in representing the United States on this significant occasion.
Ambassador Rana highlighted that Slovakia's acquisition of fourteen F-16 aircraft enhances its air defense capabilities. "The F-16 Block 70 is the most modern model of the F-16 jet fighter," said Rana. This investment is part of Slovakia's historic military modernization effort and supports both self-defense and NATO defense goals.
Amid ongoing tensions in Europe due to Russia's actions in Ukraine, these jets will bolster Slovakia's ability to deter threats and strengthen its integration within NATO’s defensive framework. "These F-16s make Slovakia stronger, and they make NATO stronger," stated Ambassador Rana.
The acquisition process began in 2018 under President Pellegrini’s administration. Ambassador Rana commended both President Pellegrini and Prime Minister Fico for their roles in securing the deal. Lockheed Martin, Slovak and American officials also received recognition for overcoming challenges during negotiations.
The United States Air Force Europe and Indiana National Guard played key roles throughout this process. The partnership between Slovakia and Indiana marks its 30th anniversary this year. One of the pilots delivering the jets was from the Indiana National Guard, showcasing Indiana’s commitment to Slovakia’s F-16 program.
As Slovakia celebrates two decades since joining NATO and the EU, Ambassador Rana emphasized shared values and collective defense commitments with these words: "Together, we will continue to work towards a future where peace and freedom prevail."
Dakujem velmi pekne [Thank you so much]. And long live the partnership and friendship between the United States of America and the Slovak Republic.
