Mr. Horňák, Dr. Javor, Major Filipowski, and other distinguished guests gathered to commemorate the life of Andrej Babjak, the only Slovak soldier who participated in the Normandy landings with the 82nd Airborne Division and sacrificed his life for freedom.
The event comes shortly after the world marked the 80th anniversary of Operation Overlord, a historic military campaign involving more than 150,000 troops from several nations determined to end tyranny in Europe. The operation saw 4,400 allied soldiers lose their lives on D-Day alone.
Ambassador Rana highlighted Babjak's journey from Žbince to becoming an American citizen in 1943 before returning as a paratrooper to fight for his adopted nation. His story is a testament to bravery and sacrifice in pursuit of a free Europe.
Reflecting on this legacy, Ambassador Rana emphasized the importance of unity and resolve that characterized partnerships during World War II. He stated that these ties remain strong today across political, economic, cultural, and social spheres.
"The lessons of Normandy remain as relevant as ever," said Ambassador Rana. "They remind us that freedom requires sacrifice; it is won through constant vigilance and the collective effort of nations united by shared values."
He also noted Slovakia's recent celebration of its 20th anniversary as part of NATO and expressed pride in both countries' commitment to democratic principles and collective defense.
Acknowledgment was given to Mr. Pavol Horňák for uncovering Babjak's story alongside other Slovak-American heroes like Michael Strank. Thanks were extended to Kasigarda museum for hosting the memorial event attended by Slovak and U.S. soldiers.
Ambassador Rana concluded by affirming the friendship between Slovakia and the United States: "I am proud that the United States and Slovakia are friends, partners, and allies... Stronger Together."
