On July 1, the U.S. Embassy in Malta marked the 249th anniversary of American independence with a celebration attended by prominent figures, including Chargé d’Affaires Ken Toko and Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg, along with other Maltese dignitaries and diplomatic representatives, were also present.
The event adopted the theme of Route 66, symbolizing freedom and interconnectedness, reflecting the evolving relationship between the United States and Malta based on mutual respect and shared interests.
Chargé Toko highlighted the robust partnership between the two nations. He commended Malta's leadership on global issues and its recent contributions to international bodies such as the OSCE and United Nations Security Council. Toko also noted growing cooperation in law enforcement, defense training, and commercial relations, pointing out that U.S. investment in Malta has surpassed $5 billion.
President Spiteri Debono expressed appreciation for progress in bilateral cooperation over the past year. She emphasized both governments' commitment to addressing current global challenges.
The evening included performances of national anthems by Maltese Cultural Ambassador Joseph Calleja, a joint color guard from the U.S. Marine Security Guard and Armed Forces of Malta, as well as entertainment by the Maltese band Klinsmann.
In his toast to the health of Maltese citizens and U.S.-Malta friendship, Chargé Toko stated: “As we look ahead to America’s 250th birthday next year,” he said, “we do so knowing that Malta will continue to be one of our closest and most trusted partners.”
