Various events in Bratislava have prompted a security alert from the U.S. Department of State, warning U.S. citizens to exercise caution from December 11th to 14th, 2023.
Protests are anticipated following the abolishment of the Special Prosecutor’s Office, with large gatherings expected in Bratislava's city center. Slovak police project attendance could reach into the thousands, possibly causing road closures and traffic disruptions. The protests are scheduled at SNP Square from December 11th to 13th and at Slobody Square from December 12th to 15th, starting at 17:00.
In addition to the protests, a soccer match between Slovan Bratislava and Olimpija Ljubljana is set for December 14th at the National Soccer Stadium. A substantial police presence is planned due to potential clashes between rival fans. Citizens are advised to avoid large groups of soccer fans and exercise caution in Old Town bars and restaurants.
The Department of State highlights global tensions as a factor for increased vigilance against possible terrorist attacks or violent actions targeting U.S. citizens and interests.
U.S. citizens are urged to stay alert in tourist areas, enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updates, and follow the Department on social media platforms.
