From February 3 to February 14, the United States will participate in discussions on scientific and technical aspects of outer space activity at the 62nd session of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) Scientific and Technical Subcommittee (STSC). Delegations from around the world will join these talks.
Established by the General Assembly in 1959, COPUOS is dedicated exclusively to international cooperation in peaceful uses of outer space. Its role has evolved with advancements in space exploration and geopolitical changes. The committee aims to strengthen the international legal framework governing outer space, facilitating expanded international cooperation.
The STSC convenes annually for two weeks to address topics such as space weather, near-Earth objects, socioeconomic development through space technology, disaster management support, global navigation satellite systems, and sustainability of outer space activities.
Kevin Conole from NASA will lead the U.S. delegation alongside Howard Solomon at the Vienna International Center in Austria. "Fostering a safe, sustainable space environment that facilitates scientific discovery, drives opportunity, creates prosperity, and ensures security on Earth and in space is in the interest of all nations," said a statement regarding this participation.
