It has been nearly three years since Russia initiated its full-scale war against Ukraine, violating Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. This conflict continues to disregard principles outlined in the UN Charter and the Helsinki Final Act.
During the OSCE’s winter recess, significant destruction from Russia's ongoing attacks was observed. On December 25th, a large-scale assault targeted Ukraine’s energy network with 78 missiles and over 100 drones. In Kharkiv, approximately 500,000 people were left without heat. A Russian cruise missile reportedly breached Moldovan and Romanian airspace.
Further attacks occurred on January 14th and 15th, focusing again on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Russian forces launched 74 drones and 43 missiles at gas and energy facilities, prompting temporary emergency shutdowns by Ukraine’s state electricity transmission operator.
The war has resulted in a million casualties and numerous atrocities committed by Russian forces, including targeting civilians, abducting children, and torturing prisoners of war.
This conflict has been disastrous for both Ukrainians and Russians. The ongoing war weakens Russia as its economy struggles and Moscow loses nearly 1,500 soldiers daily.
President Trump emphasized that Russia's war against Ukraine must end. He suggested that President Putin should begin negotiations to resolve the conflict to prevent further deterioration for Russia. If not resolved soon, the United States is prepared to increase pressure through sanctions and tariffs.
Efforts will continue to ensure a stable resolution that secures the safety of Ukraine and regional partners while preventing future conflicts.
"Russia’s war must stop," concludes the statement urging an immediate end to hostilities.
