The U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai marked its National Day on August 22 at the Taj Palace Hotel. The event was attended by Chargé d’Affaires Ambassador Kathleen Stephens of the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, U.S. Consul General in Mumbai Tom Vajda, and Maharashtra Chief Secretary Swadheen Kshatriya as the chief guest.
Ambassador Stephens, who has been in New Delhi since June 2014, emphasized the importance of the relationship between the United States and India. She stated, “The U.S. message could not be clearer. We, as the U.S. government and as the American people, are ready and eager to engage with India and Indians on all fronts to strengthen further our bilateral relationship. And we are ready to engage at the highest levels.” She also congratulated both nations following India's recent Independence Day celebrations.
Consul General Vajda highlighted shared interests between India and the United States: “India and the United States have a shared stake in each other’s future. From our democratic institutions to our common values, from higher education to high-tech innovation, and even from Hollywood to Bollywood, our relationship is truly a joint venture.”
The event celebrated America's Declaration of Independence adopted on July 4, 1776, recognizing its history as a longstanding democracy alongside India, known as the world’s largest democracy.
A photo exhibit showcased tourism and business travel opportunities in America. Attendees sang national anthems of both countries before witnessing a "Color Guard" march by U.S. Marines honoring U.S. Independence Day. A live band provided music for guests who participated actively in the festivities.
