During her inaugural visit to Assam on August 28-29, American Center Director Joanne “JJ” Joria toured the American Corner in Guwahati. This center, an extension of the American Library Kolkata's resources in the northeast, was established through a collaboration between the U.S. Consulate in Kolkata and Darwin School of Business. It was officially opened by Ambassador Peter Burleigh on February 25, 2012.
The American Corner serves as a resource hub offering current and reliable information about the United States. It aims to meet the diverse academic needs of students, teachers, professionals, and others in northeast India. The center houses approximately 1,500 books along with DVDs and periodicals covering topics such as American English, U.S. education, history, political and social sciences, environment, and travel. Additionally, it has a growing collection for children and young adults. Over 130 members utilize this facility for various academic and leisure pursuits.
As part of her educational outreach efforts, Ms. Joria engaged with students from Handique Girls College, Don Bosco School, and Maharishi Vidya Mandir. She discussed opportunities for higher education in the United States with them.
Ms. Joria also met with local alumni from various U.S. Department of State-funded exchange programs like the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and representatives from local NGOs. Her visit concluded with an interaction with members of the media fraternity.
