The U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai is set to launch the English Access Microscholarship Program at Anjuman-I-Islam’s Syed Tyabji Girls High School in Nagpada, Mumbai. The inauguration will be conducted by Cultural Affairs Officer Anamika Chakravorty on June 25, 2014.

A total of 100 students from Syed Tyabji Girls High School will participate in this program. This initiative is part of a collaboration between the U.S. Consulate General Mumbai and Anjuman-I-Islam along with its affiliated schools: Saif Tyabji Girls High School, Jan Mohammed Cassum Co-Ed School, and Ahmed Sailor High School for Boys. Over two years, these students will acquire English skills aimed at improving their job prospects and educational opportunities. Chakravorty stated, “The Access program opens a window to a world of ideas and opportunities for students. English proficiency is a tool to succeed in today’s interconnected and interdependent world.”

The English Access Microscholarship Program by the U.S. State Department supports young individuals aged 14 to 18 globally in learning English. Since its inception, it has been implemented through U.S. embassies across 44 countries, enrolling around 20,000 students worldwide. The program not only focuses on language training but also provides an American-style classroom experience that promotes active learning.

In India, the Access Program began in 2004 with four locations and has since expanded to include 14 cities. It offers two years of instruction comprising 180 hours per academic year plus a summer intensive course lasting 30 hours. Participants also engage in activities exposing them to U.S culture, democratic values, and community service projects.

Anjuman-I-Islam caters to approximately 4,300 female students from kindergarten through grade twelve under the Maharashtra State Education Board curriculum primarily using Urdu as the medium of instruction while offering science and mathematics courses in English.
