Thank you, Mr. President. And thank you, High Representative Borrell, for your briefing and participation today.
The United States expressed gratitude for the European Union's contributions to international peace and security through its partnership with the United Nations. "The EU has proven a reliable partner with the UN in responding to threats to international peace and security," was stated during the remarks.
Putin’s aggression against Ukraine was highlighted as a pressing issue, emphasizing the need to uphold the UN Charter and principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. The importance of collaboration between the UN and EU in addressing crises was noted: "It is true of the UN, and it is true of the EU that we are stronger when we work together."
The EU Advisory Mission's support of Ukraine’s Office of the Prosecutor General in investigating atrocities committed during Russia’s war was particularly appreciated. Additionally, cooperation extends beyond Europe, with efforts such as implementing the UN arms embargo on Libya being acknowledged: "Thanks to the mission’s information gathering and patrols, human smuggling and trafficking networks are being disrupted."
The United States and EU have coordinated humanitarian aid efforts in conflict zones while advocating for accountability and respect for international humanitarian law. Both entities remain significant donors to organizations like WFP and FAO.
Following armed clashes in Sudan last April, support from both parties bolstered UN response efforts to address humanitarian needs. Cooperation with regional organizations like the EU is deemed crucial now more than ever.
In Somalia, joint efforts have been made against al-Shabaab with particular recognition given to the EU's augmented support to ATMIS. This cooperation aims at capacity building as security responsibilities transition to the Somali National Army.
In Gaza, international cooperation is needed to combat a humanitarian crisis. Continued assistance will be vital for reconstruction planning once violence ceases.
Afghanistan remains another focus area where collaborative efforts aim at supporting UNAMA's work toward integrating Afghanistan into the international community under specific conditions required from the Taliban.
The role of complementary assistance through regional organizations like the EU ensures more effective operations by extending reach and impact: "When done right, it extends the UN’s impact and reach."
Finally, appreciation was extended towards "the EU’s role as a crucial partner" alongside the United Nations Security Council in maintaining peace and international security.
Thank you, Mr. President.
