The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution drafted by the United Kingdom, calling for a ceasefire in Sudan. The United States expressed satisfaction with the Council's unity in passing this resolution and congratulated the UK delegation for its efforts to reach a consensus.

The conflict in Sudan has persisted for nearly a year, prompting the Council to unanimously condemn the violence and demand an immediate ceasefire. The resolution also calls on all parties involved to remove barriers that hinder critical humanitarian assistance.

Recent developments include an announcement from the Sudanese government agreeing to open one cross-border access route by land from northern Chad and allowing access by air. However, this measure is deemed insufficient by international observers. "Addressing the dire humanitarian needs of all Sudanese requires unhindered cross line and cross border access from multiple points of entry to the most devastated areas of Sudan," stated a U.S. representative.

There is an urgent call for more action to ensure lifesaving aid reaches those most vulnerable in Sudan. The failure of SAF authorities to lift prohibitions on cross-border aid could lead to unnecessary death and suffering among civilians.

Both the SAF (Sudanese Armed Forces) and RSF (Rapid Support Forces) are urged to facilitate unhindered humanitarian access and adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law. A ceasefire, along with unrestricted humanitarian access, is deemed essential to prevent famine and long-term catastrophe.

The statement strongly condemns atrocities committed by both parties in Sudan and demands greater protection for civilians, respect for human rights, and compliance with international laws.

Furthermore, there is a call for united efforts to prevent the flow of weapons fueling the conflict. The U.S. acknowledged the Council's work on renewing the mandate of the Panel of Experts on Sudan.

Lastly, support was reiterated for Ramtane Lamamra, Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan, emphasizing continued backing for his mission.
