Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield and U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello recently addressed the ongoing crisis in Sudan, highlighting the severe humanitarian challenges faced by millions of Sudanese people during Ramadan. "Instead of gathering for bountiful iftars, some 18 million Sudanese people face acute food insecurity," said Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield.
The situation remains dire, with only five percent of the UN's humanitarian appeal for Sudan met so far. "More than just lacking funding, though, humanitarian workers are simply unable to deliver it to those in need," she added, citing obstacles imposed by combatants on both sides of the conflict.
Thomas-Greenfield emphasized the urgent need for action: "We once again call for the SAF to immediately and fully reopen all of its border crossings with Chad for humanitarian purposes." She urged swift Security Council intervention if necessary.
Special Envoy Perriello reiterated these concerns, noting that "we are in a crisis that is already fatal for many of the most vulnerable." He stressed the importance of restoring peace and returning to democratic progress initiated in 2019.
Perriello acknowledged efforts from international bodies but emphasized that more needs to be done urgently. He highlighted U.S. sanctions against bad actors on both sides and praised innovative local solutions like emergency response rooms aimed at addressing immediate needs despite difficult circumstances.
The discussion also covered potential actions by the Security Council following an ignored resolution calling for a ceasefire during Ramadan. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield stated that further measures might be needed to address cross-border issues from Chad into Sudan.
Questions from journalists included inquiries about current violence levels and what specific steps can be taken internationally to encourage dialogue between rival factions within Sudan's military forces. Perriello mentioned ongoing efforts like the Jeddah process while stressing unity among Sudanese citizens as key towards achieving peace.
As part of broader diplomatic efforts around this issue, both officials underscored their commitment alongside global partners towards alleviating suffering through increased humanitarian assistance and facilitating peaceful resolutions where possible.
