The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Afghan people through its backing of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield emphasized this support following the UN Security Council's decision to renew UNAMA's mandate.
In her remarks, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield commended the efforts of UNAMA staff working under challenging conditions in Afghanistan. She also acknowledged Japan for its leadership during the mandate renewal process. The extension allows the United Nations to continue addressing critical priorities in Afghanistan, including alleviating humanitarian and economic crises, promoting peace and stability, facilitating political dialogue, and supporting human rights efforts.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield highlighted these initiatives as especially significant during Women's History Month and coinciding with the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women. "These are worthy efforts every day," she stated.
She noted that more work remains regarding Afghanistan but stressed that "today’s unanimous vote sends a very strong message."
Furthermore, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield reiterated calls for implementing Resolution 2721 by appointing a UN Special Envoy to engage with international communities, the Taliban, and Afghans. "The Afghan people deserve to see peace, security, and stability; to enjoy human rights and fundamental freedoms," she concluded.
