Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield recently visited the Atomic Bomb Museum in Nagasaki, Japan, where she reflected on the impact of nuclear weapons and the importance of disarmament. She expressed gratitude to Governor Oishi, Mayor Suzuki, and Museum Director Inoue for their hospitality during her visit.
At the Peace Park earlier in the day, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield paid her respects to those who perished in the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Her visit to the museum served as a powerful reminder of the devastation caused by nuclear weapons. "It was a very powerful reminder that a nuclear weapon should never be used again," she stated.
The ambassador had an opportunity to meet with Dr. Tomonaga, a survivor of the Nagasaki bombing who has dedicated his life to studying radiation effects and advocating against nuclear war. The meeting prompted reflection on how to honor those who lost their lives and preserve the stories of survivors like Dr. Tomonaga.
Drawing inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield highlighted his advocacy against nuclear arms races alongside his fight for racial justice. Quoting Dr. King, she emphasized transforming "the negative nuclear arms race which no one can win to a positive contest to harness man’s creative genius for making peace."
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield reiterated that "a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought." She called for continued efforts towards disarmament and preventing proliferation worldwide. The United States is open to engaging in bilateral arms control discussions with Russia and China without preconditions.
She acknowledged Japan as a strong partner in these efforts, especially within the UN Security Council where both nations collaborate on addressing threats like North Korea's proliferation activities.
Reflecting on her recent visit to Washington D.C.'s MLK Memorial surrounded by cherry blossoms gifted by Japan, she noted its symbolic connection between peace, justice, reckoning, and understanding.
While acknowledging Nagasaki's enduring scars from its tragic past, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield urged for global efforts ensuring it remains "the last place to ever experience" such horrors again.
Looking ahead with optimism fueled by young leaders' determination toward this cause; she anticipated discussions with students from local universities eager about tackling these issues
