Christopher P. Lu, Ambassador | U.S. Mission to the United Nations

Good morning. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield addressed an event marking the one-year anniversary of the Sudan conflict, focusing on women's leadership and impact. She expressed gratitude to the Alliance for Peacebuilding for hosting the conversation and acknowledged Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello's recent visit to the region.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield highlighted the severe impact of the conflict on women in Sudan, noting that "there are few people in Sudan whose lives and livelihoods have not been impacted by this war." She described harrowing incidents involving girls being kidnapped, transported to Darfur, and subjected to sexual violence by Rapid Support Forces. Access to essential medical support remains limited.

Reflecting on her visit to a refugee camp in Chad, she recounted a poignant encounter with a young woman who said, "they took away my ambition." The ambassador emphasized her commitment to ensuring that women regain their ambition through collaborative efforts with colleagues like Tom Perriello.

The ambassador acknowledged the bravery and resilience of women facing these challenges. She noted that despite being cast as victims, "ordinary women do extraordinary things" in response to the war. Women-led initiatives have emerged, providing aid and documenting sexual violence while advocating for peace.

April 11 marks five years since Omar al-Bashir's ouster, largely driven by Sudanese women's efforts. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield recalled past instances where women played crucial roles in advocating for peace and democracy in Sudan.

She urged international support for these efforts: "We have an obligation to uplift them as they work to advance peace, justice, and accountability." The United States will continue advocating for humanitarian law respect and increased assistance while seeking accountability for ongoing atrocities.

In closing remarks, she extended gratitude towards grassroots leaders working towards a better future: "Know that you have an ally in me and you have an ally in the United States."
