The U.S. Embassy in Timor Leste has announced the opening of applications for the Summer 2026 Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) program for secondary educators. The SUSI initiative is an intensive academic program designed to give secondary school teachers and administrators from around the world a deeper understanding of American society, culture, values, and institutions.
The program aims to strengthen curricula and provide resources for educators to teach about the United States in their home countries. It also seeks to position the United States as a preferred partner for educational exchanges and training opportunities.
According to information provided by the embassy, “The overall program goals are to strengthen curricula; provide educators and administrators with resources to teach about the United States in secondary schools and other academic institutions upon their return home; and ensure that the United States is the preferred partner for educational exchanges and training opportunities.”
Participants will take part in five-week programs at various academic institutions across the United States during summer 2026. Each institute includes a four-week academic residency followed by a one-week field experience in another region of the country. Activities include lectures, panels, workshops, site visits, meetings with practitioners, and cultural events. The curriculum covers key readings such as the Gettysburg Address and American Constitution, along with visits to historical landmarks.
There are two tracks available: one for classroom teachers focusing on content about U.S. society rather than teaching methods, and another for administrators that emphasizes sociocultural understanding, equitable learning communities, and diversity within U.S. education.
Selected participants will receive international airfare, housing, allowances for books and incidentals, health insurance while in the U.S., and visa support.
Eligibility criteria specify that applicants must be Timorese citizens fluent in English who are mid-career professionals—typically aged 30-50—with demonstrated dedication to secondary education. Preference is given to those with little or no prior experience in the United States.
