The United States has pledged financial support to combat illegal fishing practices affecting sharks and rays in Ecuadorian waters through the Habla Tiburón project. The initiative, announced on June 28, 2023, aims to implement effective fisheries management strategies that ensure the sustainability of these species. Over five years, the U.S. will contribute $11.9 million to this effort.
The project is a collaboration between the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Charles Darwin Foundation, and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Ecuador. It seeks to transform fishing communities in Ecuador into leading hubs for responsibly sourced seafood both regionally and internationally.
A launch event for Habla Tiburón took place at the Charles Darwin Research Station with participation from officials of both governments, WWF Ecuador, the Charles Darwin Foundation, and representatives from local fishermen's cooperatives. Daniel Sánchez-Bustamante, USAID Director in Ecuador, stated: “This project will significantly contribute to lowering shark and ray mortality to ecologically acceptable levels and to eliminating illegal fishing by the large pelagic artisanal fleet.”
Additionally, Habla Tiburón plans to collaborate with the Government of Ecuador in establishing a working group focused on sharks and rays. This group will encompass various sectors of Ecuador’s fishing industry and aim to promote economic development while fostering inclusive decision-making processes that empower women and people with disabilities.
