The U.S. Consulate General in Curaçao has issued a reminder that dengue fever is prevalent in parts of the Caribbean, particularly during rainy seasons. The viral illness is transmitted through bites from the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
Symptoms of dengue fever include high fever, headaches, back pain, rash, muscle cramps, itching of the palms and soles of the feet, pain behind the eyes, loss of appetite, and bruising on the arms and legs. Individuals experiencing these symptoms are advised to seek immediate medical attention for testing. Treatment options may involve IV hydration and medical support for dehydration. Patients are recommended to use acetaminophen (Paracetamol/Tylenol), stay hydrated with cool fluids, and rest. Additional methods like using fans and tepid sponging can help reduce fever.
To minimize exposure to dengue fever, several precautionary measures are suggested: cover water storage containers and empty plant pots daily; regularly apply mosquito repellent containing DEET when outdoors; wear long sleeves and pants outside; spray clothing with DEET or bug repellant; protect infants with mosquito nets over beds, cribs, and strollers; ensure windows and door screens are intact to keep mosquitoes out.
